Westgold is seeking an experienced Alternate Manager Open Pit to play a key leadership role in the safe, efficient and commercially focused delivery of our open pit mining operations. This is a senior operational position suited to someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment and can balance technical excellence with strong people leadership
About the Role
Reporting to the Open Pit Manager, this site‑based position operates on an 8:6 roster and provides day‑to‑day operational oversight, technical guidance and leadership continuity across our open pit mining activities. You will support the execution of mine plans, maintain high operational standards and step into the statutory role when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily open pit activities to ensure safe, efficient and compliant execution of mining plans.
- Provide operational continuity by acting as the Open Pit Manager when required.
- Align field execution with production schedules and longer‑term planning objectives.
- Oversee drill and blast quality, ore control and material movement to maximise recovery and minimise dilution.
- Analyse operational performance, identify constraints and implement practical improvements.
- Work collaboratively with geology, survey, geotechnical and planning teams to ensure technical inputs are effectively applied in the field.
- Maintain oversight of pit wall conditions, geotechnical controls and compliance with all technical recommendations.
- Monitor ore reconciliation trends and drive corrective actions where needed.
- Support contractor performance management, ensuring delivery against safety, physical and commercial expectations.
- Contribute to cost control by monitoring equipment utilisation, dig rates and productivity.
- Provide coaching and leadership to engineers, supervisors and frontline teams to build capability and consistency.
- Maintain strong visibility in the field to reinforce standards and address emerging issues promptly.
- Undertake additional operational or technical duties as directed by the Open Pit Manager.
About You
You are an experienced open pit mining professional with a strong operational mindset, commercial awareness and the ability to lead high‑performing teams.
Essential:
- Tertiary qualification in a mining‑related discipline
- Minimum 10 years’ mining experience, including at least 5 years in gold
- Minimum 5 years’ leadership experience in open pit mining
- Unrestricted Quarry Manager’s Certificate of Competency
- Eligibility for appointment as Site Senior Executive under Mines Regulations
- Strong knowledge of WHS Act 2020 and WHS (Mines) Regulations 2022
- Current C Class Driver’s Licence
- AusIMM membership
